Eyjafjallajokull Volcano Tour
Super Jeep Day Tour from Reykjavik

In the 2010 Eyjafjallajokull volcano eruption changed the surrounding landscape forever.  On this tour we go on both sides of the volcano, exploring the effects the eruption had on the nearby areas, especially the glacier itself.   Our strong and reliable Super Jeeps will take you up to Gigjokull glacier and cross unbridged rivers into Thorsmork valley, to see the famous Eyjafjallajokull from different perspectives.

Itinerary Eyjafjallajokull Volcano Tour

Traveling east out of Reykjavik along the south coast we get to the base of Eyjafjallajokull, the famous volcano that stopped all the air traffic in 2010.  We start by driving to the north side of the volcano, towards Thorsmork, crossing several unbridged rivers, which is a lot of action and fun, to reach Gigjokull glacier tongue where melted ice flowed down from the eruption.  This is as close as one can get to the volcano and offers a fantastic view of the ice fall which crumbles down from the top crater. Nowhere is it more evident that the glaciers are shrinking and changes in the landscape since the eruption are very dramatic.

Our next stop is Seljalandsfoss, a free falling waterfall, where we take a short path that leads behind the waterfall and you can feel the spray and drizzle on your face. From Seljalandsfoss we drive to the south side of Eyjafjallajokull, to another waterfall, Skogafoss. If lucky with the weather we get an excellent view of the summit of the glacier and volcano and we see the farmlands that were most affected by the eruption. South Skogafoss waterfall we can access the black sand beach.
If time, we might take a slightly different route back to Reykjavik as we always try to make the most of the day for our customers.

FAQ for Eyjafjallajokull Volcano Tour

Q: What is the difference between this tour and the Thorsmork tour?
A: This tour covers a larger area, both sides of the volcano, so a bit more driving and shorter stops while the Thorsmork tour does not go to the south side but instead goes further into the Thorsmork valley where we have more time for short hikes or walks.
The tours are similar though so we don’t recommend booking both.

Q: Where do we have lunch?
A: Normally we stop at Hvolsvollur town and pick up sandwiches, snacks and drinks so that you are free to eat when ever hunger hits. Lunch is not included though – we would dare to presume what you like for lunch.

“We loved it”
There was a moment during this super jeep tour that I looked out of the window across the glacier and realised this was one of the best days of my life. It was a day full of fun, beauty, learnings and even some surprises. The small size of the group makes for a very personalised experience. We loved it and your beautiful country thank you.

“Eyjafjallajokull volcano Super Jeep tour”
This is an 8 hour super jeep trip into the bowls of Eyjafjnallajokull volcano, the one that eruption in 2010, plus a special ending at Seljalandsfoss waterfall. What a trip of a lifetime. Pick up at your hotel, sights of southern Iceland, views and experiences of a lifetime. Our Guide, Lars, just super. To get to stand on top of a glacier field and look down to the hot spot of the volcano, a black spot where hot lava rock melts the ice and snow, to see the Westman Islands about 30 miles off the coast-special. You just have to go!
