Iceland's Spectacular South Shore

Iceland's south shore around Eyjafjallajokull is very scenic and has many classic sights including two beautiful waterfalls, glaciers and volcanoes as well as the black sand beach. We make the tour different from the bus excursions by including a few places not accessible to the buses and we don't have more than 6 people on the tour - so much smaller group and a bigger adventure. We go off-road on the black sand beach and drive up on the glacier where on a clear day you will enjoy amazing view of the now famous Eyjafjallajokull volcano and a high view over the south shore of Iceland. |

Itinerary for the Spectacular South + Glacier Super-Jeep day tour
Our journey begins by driving east through Iceland´s countryside to the first waterfall, Urridafoss which has the largest volume of water of all waterfalls in Iceland. On the way towards the foot of Eyjafjallajokull glacier we pick up lunch and refreshments before visiting the clear and free falling waterfall of Seljalandsfoss. We take a short walk behind the waterfall and to feel the refreshing spray and drizzle from this picturesque waterfall.
Refreshed we continue to Myrdalsjokull, Iceland's fourth largest glacier and home of the famous volcano, Katla and on clear day, a view over to Eyjafjallajokull - the volcano that caused all the troubles last spring. On a clear day we get great photo ops of both glaciers. After driving up to snow level on a mountain track we enjoy the incredible view of the south shore and two glaciers and the evidence of the recent eruption in Eyjafjallajokull.
On the glacier you have the option to go snowmobiling for an hour (not included).
We can also visit the glacier tongue Solheimajokull where you can see the blue glacier ice. Within 15 minutes the scenery changes completely when we go off-roading on the black sand beach, a fun detour to Skogarfoss waterfall.
On the way back to Reykjavik we check out a geothermal borehole in the lava field by volcano Hengill. Once in Reykjavik we will drop you off at your hotel or a restaurant of your choice.
Our driverguides are knowledgeable about Iceland and will gladly adjust to your particular interest the best they can, whether it's nature, geology, history, current affairs - or 4x4 stuff. We refer to it as 'conversational guiding'. The interaction with our clients is a big part of why love our jobs.

Frequently Asked Questions about The Spectacular South Tour
Q: Do we need to bring lunch or is there a place to stop on the way?
A: We stop at a gas station in the town of Hvolsvollur where you will have a chance to buy some sandwiches and drinks. There is a new cafe at Solheimajokull but we can't trust that it's always open so it's better to stock up for the day.
Q: Do we have to book the snowmobiles in advance or can we decide when we get to the glacier?
A: The snowmobiles need to be booked in advance because the snowmobile company needs to know how many guides to send and how many skidoos they need to prepare.
Q: Do we need special clothes for the snowmobiles?
A: The snowmobile company provides helmets, balaclavas, overalls, gloves and over-boots. However, whether you go snowmobiling or not, we always recommend having wind and wetproof clothing - anytime of the year. It's better to have it and not need it, rather than the other way around.
