Lunar Landscape & Blue Lagoon
Super Jeep Day Tour from Reykjavik
The lunar landscape of Reykjanes, with all its volcanoes and different lava formations, gives you a good idea why Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin came to Iceland to practice their moonwalk. Our adventure is not quite as extreme but still very extraterrestrial.
You might call this a “hot” tour since you can experience geothermal power, blowing steam, hot springs and endless lava and/or a relaxing soak in the Blue Lagoon.
This tour can easily be combined with a pick up or drop off at KEF airport and we have many versions of this tour so it can be customized to your needs wishes. Here are a few things we can include:
Bridge Across Continents (tectonic plate boundaries)
Gunnuhver geothermal area & Reykjanes Lighthouse
The Lava Tunnel, lava cave (ISK 6500 per person)
Tour of a geothermal power plant at Hellisheidi (ISK 1200 per person)
Seltun geothermal hot springs in Krýsuvík
Krysuvik bird cliff (interesting in spring but not winter)
Blue Lagoon (Different packages available)
Join us on a great geological exploration in the lunar-like landscape of Reykjanes in a great day tour – and do it in style and comfort of our Super Jeeps. The Nature Explorer Lunar Landscape adventure is a great way to see very different landscape and enjoy a relaxing vacation.
Itinerary for Lunar Landscape & Blue Lagoon
As all our day tours, this is a private tour so we can easily adjust to your timing, needs and wishes. It’s often done on an arrival or departure day, since many of the sights are not far from the airport. Here are two examples on how the itinerary can look:
A) Starting in Reykjavik and ending in KEF airport
We start by going driving up to the geothermal area around Hengill volcano and explore the area around the geothermal power plant. We then continue through a secret little track where we need to cross an un-bridged river many times before we get back to a main road (our driver-guides love this bit). We don’t stay long on the main road but go into another lava field where you have the opportunity to go into a lava tube cave, called The Lava Tunnel. It’s an hour with a special caving guide, easy and interesting.
Next we drive along the shore line of Reykjanes, through more lava fields to a geothermal area called Seltun in Krysuvik. We are in fact driving right where the tectonic plates meet; the Eurasia-plate and the North America-plate. This is the reason why the Reykjanes Peninsula is so volcanic. We make our way along the rough tracks to Lake Kleifarvatn, a secluded mountain lake with black sanded beaches. At Seltun in Krysuvik we will explore a large geothermal area with many hot springs, boiling mud pools and blowing steamvents. Some journalists have said this are to be more fascinating than the more famous Geysir area. There are certainly fewer people and it is a strange and colorful world. In the spring it’s worthwhile to take a look at the Atlantic Ocean from the sea cliffs at Krýsuvik which is brimming with sea birds.
Instead of the Lava Tunnel, you could enjoy a relaxing soak in the Blue Lagoon before we drop you off in time for your afternoon flight back home.
B) Starting in KEF airport and ending in Reykjavik
Our driver-guide will be waiting for you as soon as you clear customs at the airport and your Iceland adventure starts right away. We start by driving to the Bridge between Continents, which as the name indicates is where the EurAsian tectonic plate meets the North American plate. From there we drive to Gunnuhver, a fascinating geothermal area with an interesting troll-story. Next we drive to the Blue Lagoon where you can enjoy a relaxing soak and perhaps have some lunch.
Instead of taking the highway to Reykjavik, we drive the scenic back roads, through the lava fields and explore this lunar landscape. We visit Seltun in Krysuvik, a colorful geothermal area and lake Kleifarvatn with it’s black beaches. Sometimes we pay a visit to the president’s house on the way into Reykjavik before dropping you off at your hotel.

FAQ for Lunar Landscape & Blue Lagoon
Q: Do we need to bring lunch or is there a place to stop on the way?
A: Usually we have lunch at the Blue Lagoon but we could also stop at a restaurant in Grindavik, a nearby fishing town.
Q: Why is the Blue Lagoon entry not included?
A: We don’t know how many people you are or which entry package you prefer. This of course affects the cost. We can book any entrance package for you and we don’t add any mark up to their prices. Note that Blue Lagoon is quite popular and they can be fully booked at certain times or even all day in high seasons.

We were pleasantly surprised by the overall quality of the tour. Our guide was very astute, charismatic, and really fun to spend the day with. He really made the trip incredibly enjoyable. Also, we are travel writers and have taken many similar trips recently, and Nature Explorer beat them all – hands down! We will highly recommend your company to as many people as we can! – David Wegner
